Ear Study

We now begin a study of ears! Much more definition can be found in lines and shading. Gaining the sense of depth and 3D is much more challenging.

Ear 1

Copied from a picture.

Ear structure

Ears come in all shapes but they all have the same basic structure.  Not necessary to remember the anatomical names, just the basic structure.

Nose 2!

Another nose copied from a photo in a magazine.  I use graphite pencil and sketch it out, always smudging the lines as I go.  Then when I think the general shape is correct, I add definition by rubbing out where the highlights are and shading in where there are shadows - to give impression of shape.  Then I add any defined lines eg see the nostril. x

Position of nose on the face

Excuse the drawing, but I think this is helpful to try and remember :-)

Nose 1

Just copied from a model in a magazine.

Nose 3

The nose of a younger person is a little more challenging in trying to capture the youthfulness which is aparently in less lines and definition.

NOSE STUDY

Noses are notoriously difficult to capture as the have smooth surfaces and few hard edges. Therefore using light and shade is the predominant skill needed to capture the curves and shape and volume of a nose.

Shoe!

My shoe!  Followed advice in one of my books .... draw the outline of the object as best you can.  Then hold up the drawing so you can see IT and the OBJECT at same time without moving your head.  Try to see which bits are not quite correct!   Redraw lines WITHOUT RUBBING OUT THE INCORRECT LINES FIRST.   Keep going until the shape begins to look more like the object.   Only at the end rub out the incorrect lines.

Once I had got the basic shape OK,  I just shaded the shoe to give it depth, and then rubbed out parts of the shading to give impression of light reflections.
